Wellness Success Story

I’ve written in a prior posting about Karrie Andes, Director of Human Resources at Deffenbaugh Industries. Karrie is the brains behind the Savvy Self-Funding Conference and Expo held annually in the Kansas City area. The Savvy was a response to her dissatisfaction with the information being offered at conferences on self insurance.

Karrie instituted a successful Wellness program at her company.  See the article describing her successes titled “Benefits Leadership in Health Plans: Where others see barriers, Andes sees opportunities”  at BenefitNews.com (follow link).  Interestingly, Karrie’s success includes other elements besides a Wellness program, including ongoing review of vendor performance (see my 8/7/06 posting).  Perhaps Karrie’s success can provide guidance or ideas for your plan.

It's great that insurers and corporations are acknowledging that emphasizing a healthier lifestyle can lead to reduced reliance on expensive health care.

Will the cost of the Jenny Craig memberships and meals outweigh the savings achieved in health care premiums? Maybe not, but it is difficult to place a cost on feeling and living healthy.

It will be a step in the right direction for many.
